What Can We Do?

  1. Write to the utility executives
  2. Write to the state legislators
  3. Write letters to the editor of newspapers
  4. Present it at our schools
  5. Buy stocks in the utility companies and go to their shareholder meetings. During the question and answer session, ask them to do more with energy efficiency and renewable energies.

Main Points to Emphasize

  1. Fossil fuel (i.e. coal, oil and natural gas) power plants are "boondoggles",  meaning they waste a lot of money, pollute, and contribute to human health problems and ecosystem damage.  They are not as good of a choice as energy efficiency and renewable energies.
  2. We regulate the utility companies. We can and should change the regulations so we get more energy efficiency and renewable energies and less pollution.
  3. Our state energy regulators told us that studies show when the use of energy efficiency goes up, energy rates go down.
  4. With existing technology, we can meet over 70% of our energy needs with energy efficiency and renewable energies*.
  5. There's new demand for green energy from consumers like us that care about our planet.

Dear ________________,

We are concerned about how humans are treating the earth. We want clean air and water. The oil spills and use of fossil fuels are hurting the ecosystems. Dependence on fossil fuels can create scarcity and conflict. There are solutions.

Fossil fuel (i.e. coal, oil and natural gas) power plants are "boondoggles", meaning they waste a lot of $$, pollute, and contribute to human health problems and ecosystem damage. They are not as good of a choice as energy efficiency and renewable energies.

We regulate the utility companies. We can and should change the regulations so we get more energy efficiency and renewable energies and less pollution. Our state energy regulators told us that studies show when the use of energy efficiency goes up, energy rates go down. With existing technology, we can meet over 70% of our energy needs with energy efficiency and renewable energies. There are already lots of examples of this working in Michigan. There's new demand for more green energy from consumers like us that care about our planet.
